ekon

  • This metal bell without tongue and fitted with a handle is knocked in rhythm with a piece of wood. There is a double one, named jimagua.
    Ekón is used in the ritual
    abakuá musics. The conga bands use it too during carnivals : in that case, Ekón plays the role of a campana, and then have not a sacred character.

  • One of the abakuá sacred drums, keep for secret ceremonies.
  • el Barrio

  • The name given to the East Harlem section of New York City in the 1920's and 30's after the migration and settlement of vast numbers of Puerto Rican and Cuban people in this area. Another term for Spanish Harlem.

  • A vocal refrain or chorus, the term applies particualrly to the vocal choruses of the Son style.
